Bidet

I’d been thinking about a bidet BEFORE the big Toilet Paper Crisis of 2020, (#CovidSucks) Trouble is, the warm air dryer - while lovely - takes forever, and I’m too impatient. The soggy backside requires more toilet paper than no bidet at all, therefore failing to achieve the TP-free goal. So, now I offer up fluffy clean cloths and a laundry deposit… here’s to cleaning the undercarriage in style!

Guest Bathroom Ceiling

The heavy popcorn ceiling in the guest bathroom had been painted over - heavily - with water-resistant paint. Probably Kilz, or something like it. The obnoxious concrete-like granules tore at my knuckles and refused to be scraped loose.

So, a few YouTube videos later, I decided to try my hand at coating over the popcorn with drywall compound. I was feeling pretty okay about my initial attempts. (See the smooth-ish area over the window?) Then life got in the way… and this is how it has looked ever since.

Then Rosemary showed me her beautiful newly popcorn-free ceiling. Knowing I could stare at this eyesore for a few more years, or throw a few hundred bucks at the problem and have it done in a couple days… done.

First coat… um… WAY better than my sorry attempt:

Coated, sanded, painted. Popcorn BE GONE!

Guest Bathroom

A quickie makeover with fresh paint and peel-and-stick tile flooring.

I decided to give the guest bathroom a quickie makeover.

I was never really a fan of the speckled blue tile, so I  jumped at the bargain bin floor tiles when I found them at Home Depot. I laid out all the full-size tiles, and managed to make a few straight cuts with scissors. I'm ready to upgrade to an exacto knife. My biggest challenge so far has been determining what line to use to define "straight". Nothing is perfectly square, so i figured I'd start with the angle you see first when you walk in.

I also picked a few paint samples. I went with the medium gray, since the dark gray looked too dark when backlit by the window.

Guest Bathroom Tweaks

Just a few updates... the bathroom previously had a bare bulb suspended in a rusting metal box. The new light and fan combo isn't sexy, but does the trick. The components are wired together, so I added a timer switch to turn the fan off after a short while.

For some reason, no one (including myself) can ever remember how to work the guest shower. (In fact, during the home buying inspection, the inspector, the agents, and everyone in the house failed at this... we had to call the seller.)

Simple solution: computer graphics and laminating plastic.

Bathroom Outlet

Rewiring the bathroom switch for convenience and safety.

The single-gang box in the guest bathroom held a combo outlet & switch. The switch controlled the vanity lights and the one outlet in the room. I learned this when I bought a nightlight and realized it only turned on when all six vanity lights burst to light as well.

I added a new two-gang box, a GFCI outlet, and a switch that is illuminated in the dark.

Shower Doors Begone

Out with the sliding glass shower doors.

Glass doors are one thing, but I could live without the etched graphics on them. Also, since the tub in the master bath is jetted (YAY!), I can't use it to bathe the dogs. So, the guest bathroom tub needs to be accessible without sitting on the metal rail and contorting my body around the glass panes.

I posted this picture on Craig's List and said the doors would be free to the first person who offered to uninstall them for me. They were gone that night... boy, I love the internet.
